How to Setup MIDI with Dead Time

Dead Time Setup for Logic X.

In order to use Dead Time's MIDI features on a piano roll, we'll need to add it as an instrument and then send audio into it. Let's assume we already have an audio source open - Logic's Drum Synth

1. Add a new MIDI track

2. Select Instrument --> scroll down to 'AU MIDI-controlled Effects' --> select Xenon Pit --> Dead Time
Step 2

3. Select 'Side Chain' --> Inst --> Inst 1 (or whatever channel you have it on)
Step 3

(If you're routing an audio track then Side Chain will have an Audio submenu)

4. Open Dead Time and change the FB (Feedback) amount to 95%

5. Create a region and add MIDI notes to change Dead Time's pitch
Step 5

Dead Time Setup for Ableton Live 12

We need to send MIDI to Dead Time from a MIDI track separate than the one Dead Time is on.

1. Create two MIDI tracks
Step 1

2. Place your instrument (Battery 4 here) and Dead Time on the first track
Step 2

3. On your second track, write your MIDI in a clip.
Step 3

3a. Click on the menu bar under MIDI To and change it to your first track (it will say "1-Battery 4" for us since the track name was changed)
Step 3a

3b. Under Track In, choose "1-Dead Time" from the dropdown menu
Step 3b

4. On the first track, write a beat in your MIDI clip using Battery 4
Step 4

5. Open Dead Time and change the FB (Feedback) amount to 95%

6. Play the clips from both tracks and Dead Time will respond to MIDI pitch changes

Dead Time Setup for FL Studio.

1. Open the mixer and add Dead Time to an insert channel (we use 1 here)
Step 1

2. Add a MIDI Out generator to the 'Channel rack'
Step 2

3. Set the Port parameter at the top right to something. It can be zero, but we'll use Port 1 here. Just make sure that the port isn't set to a port already in use
Step 3

4. Open Dead Time from the mixer and click on its Settings button (the one with the gear at top left), then click the plugin options button (the icon with the plug and gear)
Step 4

5. In the plugin options view, look to where it says MIDI (toward the bottom left) and find "Input port." Set that to the same value as before (we used Port 1)
Step 5

6. Right click the MIDI Out generator and click on Piano Roll. Write some MIDI (we start on C3 here)
Step 6

7. Open Dead Time and change the FB (Feedback) amount to 95%

8. Make sure your kit or channel is set to Insert 1

9. Click play and Dead Time will respond to MIDI pitch changes
Step 7
